What to Check Before Driving Off in Your Rental Car

Picking up your rental car is exciting, but taking a few minutes to run through a quick checklist can save you from stress and additional charges later. Burswood Car Rentals maintains all vehicles in excellent condition, but a pre-drive check is still a wise step.

Essential Pre-Drive Checklist

  1. Exterior Condition: Walk around the car and check for scratches, dents, or paint marks. Ensure all existing damage is documented on the rental agreement or via photos.
  2. Interior Condition: Check the seats, dashboard, carpets, and boot. Report any stains, smells, or damage.
  3. Lights & Indicators: Test headlights, taillights, indicators, brake lights, and interior lights.
  4. Tyre Pressure & Tread: Inspect tyres for visible damage and ensure they’re properly inflated.
  5. Fuel Level: Confirm the fuel level matches what’s noted in your contract. Note the fuel type to avoid costly mistakes at the pump.
  6. Windscreen & Wipers: Make sure there are no cracks or chips in the glass, and that wipers and washer fluid work properly.
  7. Dashboard Warnings: Once you start the car, check that no warning lights are on.
  8. Safety Equipment: Ensure there’s a spare tyre, jack, triangle, and any necessary safety tools.
  9. Familiarise Yourself with Controls: Adjust mirrors, seats, and steering. Learn how to operate the air-con, lights, radio, and boot release.
